Andy Harmsen is a playwright and producer from Melbourne, Australia. He is a researcher and tutor at The University of Melbourne working with Associate Professor Denise Varney and Raimondo Cortese, at the Victorian College of Arts. He was shortlisted for Red Stitch Theatre’s INK program for 2015 with his play, LONG SHADOWS. His most recent work for the stage was his unique adaptation of Shakespeare’s, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM for Sly Rat Theatre’s ‘Shakespeare on the Maribyrnong River Festival’ (2016). He also received a Grace Marion Wilson Fellowship from Writer’s Victoria for 2012.
Andy is also the co-artistic director of the Melbourne and Sydney-based independent theatre company, Sly Rat Theatre Co. The company has produced shows for Sydney’s National Institute of the Dramatic Arts, Perth’s The Blue Room Theatre and Melbourne’s Revolt Artspace. His writing credits include FOREIGN BODIES (Owl & Cat Theatre 2015), DOOMSDAY DEVICES (Revolt Artspace 2014), THE MARTYRS (Revolt Artspace 2013), SLEEPING DOGS LIE (PACS ScreenLab 2009), DIRTY PRETTY NAILS (The Blue Room Theatre 2007), and BYE, BYE BABY: A MUSICAL (Nexus Theatre 2005).
Andy has written for the International Journal of Culture and Arts, Island Dynamics, and The Conversation. He is also a prolific sound designer and composer, having recently worked with Precious Gift Burlesque, The Itty Bitty Titty Committee, Eagle’s Nest Theatre, and all of Sly Rat Theatre’s projects.
