The Owl & Cat Theatre and Studio Welder present our 4-week Beginner part-time class for actors.
“Acting Essentials” has been designed for people who are new to the field of acting, or haven’t been in the game for a long time and want to break the ice back into the industry. This short course can also benefit graduates who might need help with public speaking, or any kind of performance not necessarily limited to acting.

Successful applicants will be made ready for the stage or the camera, and is a great stepping stone to our advanced term courses or drop-in acting classes. Course fees include complimentary Head Shots with our professional photographer.

Class Breakdown:

  • Class 1 – will focus on mind and soul, working out your inner intention with the craft,  where you lack and where you are strong. We will select a monologue to begin work  on and work on a neutral script scene and solo observation / behaviour exercise.
  • Class 2 – will be exploring sensory character work and the use of imagination and music in development and research stages.
  • Class 3 – script analysis and breakdown, beats, intention needs and Uta Hagen work. You will also work on your monologue on the floor with notes and direction.
  • Class 4 – monologue performance direction and notes.
  • After the course, students will be invited to present their work in a showcase performance. (optional)
  • Upon completion of the 4 weeks, we hold a complimentary head-shot photo shoot.  (2 looks and 2 edited selects).

The purpose of this 4 week program is that it is the first step in the students journey of becoming a confident actor or performer. You won’t complete this Acting Essentials class and be a complete and established actor, more so that it will ready you for your advanced gym classes or 8 month part time Professional Actor’s part time course.

It will certainly result in graduates being ready for representation by agent or casting, which means being a genuine contender for commercials or theatre. This course was designed to be your launchpad, and those that continue with their training thereafter will be given access to a plethora of opportunities through our partnerships, including theatre auditions, New York exchange opportunities, Casting Auditions and a permanent place in the Studio Welder/Owl & Cat Theatre family.

Full Course Fees: $280

  • cost for professional Head-shots included in price
  • paid in full before class commencement

The acting classes at the Owl & Cat have taught me that theatre is much more than acting in front of an audience.

"Provocative theatre at its best. What I love about Owl & Cat Theatre productions is their audacity to present works that confront the complexities of human interaction and go deeper."

Jo Malone - Weekend Notes

"I found the various techniques that were taught in the class helped me to not only find my character, by clearly identifying how I moved and spoke as this person, but also enabled me to establish my physical environment, so that I wasn’t “acting on a stage” but I was “living moment to moment in my environment”

David M

"My love of Laban was rekindled in class!! Thank you!"
